Annually all over the world around 7 people from a thousand fall ill with the appendicitis. Acute inflammation of the appendix needs an immediate surgary, which is done under general anesthesia. However, the scientists from Nottingham Digestive Diseases Centre in Great Britain claimed that antibiotics can be more efficient than surgery, if the appendicitis is simple.
The researchers analized the treatment results of 900 adult patients with acute appendicitis without complications. 430 of them had a surgery, the rest 470 were cured with antibiotics.
As a result 63% of those who had antibacterial therapy, the symptoms of appendicite didn’t show up during a year. The scientists mentioned that the time spent in hospital and the effectiveness of treatment didn’t differ in both groups.
The specialists think that the treatment using antibiotics is suitable only for those patients, who have an appendicitis without complications. They recommend to use this method in difficult for diagnostics cases.
